Log Burning Stoves Benefit Home Owners in Many Ways

by admin on November 3, 2009

Log burning stoves are any type of stove designed to burn wood logs as a fuel source. There are many benefits to log stoves other than just creating heat for your home. There is something homey and welcoming about having a real fire heating you home but that certainly isn’t the only benefit

The cost of fossil fuels is quite expensive and the supply of these fuels, such as gas, oil and coal, is known to be running lower and lower every year as the world consumes more and more of the planet’s resources. Electricity is expensive and is frequently generated from a fossil fuel source at the power plant.

Log burning allows you to obtain fuel for your stove at very reasonable prices and sometimes you can get wood to burn free if you contact some local saw mills or lumber yards. Just because the name says “log” doesn’t mean that is the only type of wood which can be burned in a log stove. You can scavenge wood from local forests and local manufacturers create scraps of wood in many processes such as building shipping containers.

A log burning stove offers an enclosed firebox which may or may not have a window to allow you to see the flames, depending on the model you choose. When compared with other types of fuels, burning logs will allow you to cut your energy bills from other sources significantly. This means the stove will pay for itself very soon and you’ll continue saving for many years to come.

Log stoves do not have some of the safety issues present with a traditional open fireplace. There is no possibility of sparks popping onto your floor and ruining carpet or starting a fire. There is no chance that a log will roll out of the fire onto the hearth since the fire is entirely enclosed. Installing a log stove does not require nearly as many home modifications as does installing a traditional fireplace. The only real modifications is wall and floor protection, stove placement meeting manufacturer’s standards, stove pipe installation, and creating a hole in the roof for the pipe to exit and be capped by the chimney cap. The installation can be accomplished in one day or you can have a professional installation service install the stove for you at affordable prices.

When a fireplace contains a fire, as much as 80% of the fuel goes up the chimney rather than into the room as heat. With log stoves, as little as 20% or slightly more of the fuel does not turn directly into heat for your home. The higher the efficiency rating, the more money you will save and the less fuel you will need to heat your home. Some log burning stoves have a secondary burning process which increases efficiency and reduces ash and exhausted gases.

There is little maintenance required for a log burning stove after it is installed. Traditional wood burning stoves or fireplaces often required ash removal as frequently as every day. You do have to remove ash from log stoves periodically but the efficiency of fuel burning means you will not have to do this very often.
