Winter is coming and it is getting really cold again! Do you already have a heater to keep you warm, or just simply thinking to get a new one that needs less hassle in cleaning but a good heating capacity? Then a Multi Fuel Stove is just right for you.

But first let’s discuss on the details that needs to consider on buying a multi fuel stove, as it could get wrong and gives you not enough heat if you purchased the wrong one for your own space.

Guidelines on Buying a Multi Fuel Stove

Because every house is uniquely built and designed interiorly, there are things that need to be considered when you are buying a stove. One wrong consideration and you might be paying for the wrong stove. You don’t need to be a genius knowing and doing these things before purchasing one. Just follow these steps and you’re good.

* Take the interior measurement of your space/ room. Using a metre measure your room’s length, width, and height of the ceiling to the floor.

* If you think that the many window glazed is not that important, then think again. Taking considerations on every small details is really a great thing to do .

* if you want to take the heat to be scattered on an open space of your home such as doors and staircase, your wall outside should not be proof against the changing temperature.

* After getting the measurement of your space/ room, an online calculator will help you get the right size/ fit of stove for your space/ room.

* If you going to bid online, watch the bids, and don’t panic when you didn’t win. There’s always another one available every after bids. You can go on a fixed price online store.

Buying a stove on a Home Depot Store is easy cause of it’s high demands everywhere.

All you have to do is test the stove and ask random questions on the sales representative on ‘Do’s and Don’ts.’

You can also purchase the stove online through internet shopping, if you won’t be able to find the model that you like most. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t ask questions on the seller…

REMEMBER: always ask anything you want to know before you buy the stove. Take advantage of questioning the seller just don’t get into their nerves.

Using Your Multi Fuel Stove

So now that you know how to buy a stove, here comes another problem. ‘I don’t know how to use it’. Here are some things I would like to share to you on using your stove.

You’ve just got to choose which fuel you want to use for your stove. You can always use a wood if you want. But other options are corn and coal and pellets, if wood is not available.

We already knows how to use the wood and coal on the stove. But what about corn and pellets? So read on and I will explain it to you.

Using Wood Pellets on Multi Fuel Stove

It is also used commonly on multi fuel stove, especially on places where wood processing is prevalently produced. It is made of small pieces of wood that are pressed together by a machine. The water content of this wood is already dried up during processing that makes it good to use as a fuel on your stove. This element should be able to generate heat. It is also easy to store cause of it’s size.

How can you use Corn on your multi fuel stove?

Yes, you heard me. Corn can also be used as a fuel on your stove. It is a form of Biomass fuel that burns clean and safe to the environment. It is also always available year after year. Believe it or not, corn contains usable fuel on it’s kernel and it is being used as it’s full capacity as heat when being used on multi fuel stoves. Shelled corn or kernel corn is usually compatible for burners like multi fuel stove. You can order it on corn farms easily and is packaged on a sack that made it easy to load in a tank of your stove. Corn burns like wood so it don’t need special handling.

Setting a Fire on Your Stove

Setting a fire on your stove can be really frustrating. I always took ages on setting one on mine. But this technique can really fire your stove easily.

You will need a paper, small size woods, medium size woods and a big log. If you are going to use a pellets and corn, then it will be fine. This procedure only applies on woods and coal.

So here’s how to fire your Multi Fuel Stove.

· Get a paper. Any paper will do, but you have to make sure first that it is not important paper that you’re going to burn.

· Crumple a few pages of paper and placed it inside the stove.

· Put some small woods/ coal on top of the paper, and using a lighter or igniters, light the papers and close the stove’s door, but not tight to let some air in. and leave for few mins.

· After a few mins. The fire should still be fine. Then you can put the medium size logs that you trimmed, inside the stove, and leave it again for another 5-10 mins. Make sure that your stove’s door is still slightly closed.

· Then, finally… put the big logs inside the stove and this time, make sure that your stove door is really shut. You can adjust the air holes on your stove for the air to get in and keep the fire burning. And your set.

Remember: just don’t put too much logs or you will be setting your whole house on fire. And no one wants’ that to happen.

You can set a fire using woods, coal and some sort of corn as a fuel. The main purpose of this is to burn these elements to its tiny bits and leave nothing but ashes. Though it burns wood and coal differently, because it’s composition.

Multi fuel stove. Is it used for cooking or a modern futuristic fireplace?

A lot of people often mistake the multi fuel stove is used for cooking, but it’s not. A multi fuel stove is actually a modern like fireplace that is movable and more portable than the old traditional fireplace where Santa Clause came out every Christmas night.

What is Multi Fuel Stove?

Ø Multi fuel stove is different form a stove that is used from cooking. Yes it’s still called a Stove and also produced fire, but the main purpose of this one, is to create fire to give heat to the entire room like the old traditional fireplace does. Compared to the traditional fireplace, multi fuel stove generates more heat. It is also more efficient than the traditional one. What’s more exciting is the fact that it is environment friendly heat source. This stove is actually made of steel and has a tray bellow to catch all the ashes that is burned while the fire is on. It’s modern/ futuristic look make it more appealing to the human eyes, that you might think it’s just a water dispenser or a really expensive house furniture or an antique drawer. Having one of these stove is a must for those who are living in a cold country.

Ø n is not identical and almost not alike. The wood contains water and resin and a little carbon, while the coals only have resin. These are 2 different elements but the stove uses it smartly as a fuel.

Choosing the Right Multi Fuel Stove

Ø Every house is different in structures, and because of it’s differences it also needs a different size of stove for a better heating efficiency.

Ø Using a metre measure your room’s length, width and height. There’s an online calculator where you can use to know what’s the perfect fit of multi fuel stove that could give the right heat for your room.

Ø Taking consideration of the other factors inside the room is a must. These factors are:

§ Glazed windows inside the room

§ Height of the ceiling that is really high from the floor

§ how far you wanted to scatter the heat in an open space, such as staircase or door

§ outside walls should not be built to separate different temperature

Why Multi Fuel Stove over Wood Burner?

Ø Wood burners are just designed to burn woods as it’s only fuel. It is usually not efficient enough to burn woods and use heat cause of the ashes. While the multi fuel stove have separate ash tray for better burning and heat. And because of the ashes that is on wood burners, the burning of wood is really slow and the heat is not that sufficient enough.

Ø Cleaning wood burners is really a big burden. You could go on cleaning for days cause of the ashes that is left with the other fresh woods that you just stuck in. Cleaning is worst during winter time as it is when you mostly need it to keep you warm. While you can just get the ash tray out and dump the ashes out on the bin in multi fuel stove. Plus the danger of being hurt on the hot embers that might burn/ scald you bad, cause it still continue to burn eventhough it is not in used for an hour.

Central Heating

Ø It is common to use a central heating generator in a home and buildings, especially on those cold locations of the countries and cold places. Installing a multi fuel stove is more practical.

Ø If you are thinking to utilize a heat that multi fuel stove generates to your whole house/ building then be advised to use a good quality back boiler installed on it. The back boiler cointains water that heats up and boiled that is attached on the radiator of the house , then you know distribute the heat all over your place. A pump is also used for bigger places and better heat distribution.

Looking For a Good Multi Fuel Stove

Ø Looking for a multi fuel stove is made easy nowadays due to it’s high demand on cold places. Home Depot Store are likely to have stocks of this Stove, especially on those who are living on North and South area. It is also being sold online, if you don’t have time to visit your nearest store to look for one.

Solid Fuel Stoves burn a variety of “solid” Fuels such as coal, peat, wood..etc and are sometimes also called multi fuel stoves.. it’s just a different name.

The reason that most people choose solid fuel stoves over single burning wood stoves is that it allows for more choice when choosing fuel to warm your home. It can often be the case that wood can be expensive or unavailable and thus you need a stove that can use other fuels to sustain your home heating.

Solid fuel/multi fuel stoves can dramatically decrease the amount of money spent each year on heating bills. I know in the UK the heating bills have been increasing year on year and my parents heating bill was totally outrageous last year ( I have tried to move them onto a solid fuel stove but sadly they won’t budge…!)

Once you have decided that you want a solid-fuel stove then you need to decide on budget… and make sure you don’t spent more than you can afford. Choosing a multi-fuel stove is a way to reduce expenditure – not add to it!

The two main materials for a solid fuel stove are:

Cast Iron (More expensive and thus last a lot longer and slightly less efficient as use firebrick or cast panels)

Steel (Cheaper but again this can effect how long it lasts but you still should expect at least 10 years – however can be more efficient as they have a skamolex heat board.)

Multi Fuel Stoves are usually placed in a prominent position so do think about the design and look as it will be a major focal point of the room. As with most material objects.. better design usually comes at a premium cost. I would suggest going down to a local showroom to see what each stove looks like.. but don’t buy just yet!

The Major manufactures for these type of stoves are:

Stanley – Cast in China but good stove..

Mulberry - Cast in China but good stove..

Efel - Cast in Europe so expect to pay more, good quality though

Nestor Martin - Cast in Europe so expect to pay more, good quality though

Charnwood – Highly recommended as have high efficiency

Arrow - Highly recommended as have high efficiency

Esse – Well liked brand.. very similar to Charnwood and Arrow

Stovax – Well liked brand.. very similar to Charnwood and Arrow

Hunter – Another highly recommended brand as has similar efficiency as Charnwood

Ok so now you have some idea of the type of stoves available your next job on your to-do list is to arrange a viewing at the relevant showrooms. Make sure you explain your needs to the salesmen/women but be wary of heavy sales tactics.

Remember – you are not going to buy the stove today.. you just want to get an idea about design and price plus any other info.

I hope you have enjoyed this little article about solid fuel stoves, make sure you also check out my future article that will explain how to purchase your choice of stove online for far less than the price in the showroom…so stay tuned.

P.S: if you have any questions.. feel free to shout in the comments and I will try to answer straight away (seriously, I am happy to help)

The Warnock Hersey wood stoves are not a true brand but they are a mark of certification. It resembles an electronic device that has been UL-listed which implies that it is safe to use and has been approved.

The company that is behind these ratings is the Intertek organization. The WH mark or Warnock Hersey mark which shows that the product is safe to use and has met the required operating standards and codes. The WH mark goes to other products like infrastructure and construction products.

In simple terms, the stove that contains the WH mark, have been accredited, tested and have all the required codes and standards and will be effectively adapted by those who are using it. Lots of consumers are confused and when they see the WH mark, they think it is a brand this is not a brand but an authorization test to ensure that the stove meets all the required codes of operation. The WH mark is a good thing since it ensures the safety guides but you really need to find the model number of the stove that you have.

This manufacture has produced the best stoves for a very long time. They were created in the 1990s and they used to give out a lot of heat which made many people to prefer them. One thing to note is that the doors used to lose the air sealing ability. The doors were latch style and over time, they would lose their usability. One can however use some new doors but it is not a guarantee that it will perform. These stoves also did not have a lot of efficiency and they will cause a lot of pollution in the long run. If you have one of these old models, you need to upgrade it to the newest model.

To keep the stove burning, you will need to do a few things. You should make more air to flow around and it will burn for longer. The air will make the fire larger and you will need to place a temporary stack damper to prevent more air.

With a variety of burners available today, it is easy to find yourself in a confused state when going out for shopping. However, if you are looking for a good option, try multi fuel burners. Doing this not only helps you see a reduction in your heating bill but this also keeps you from relying heavily on fossil fuels. It’s worth remembering that these stoves are sometimes called Multi Fuel Stoves.

What’s more, these burners allow you to make a choice about the way you would like to warm your property. It is so because along with using electricity and gas, you will have a number of other cheaper energy sources. For example:

· You can choose to go with pellets which are created from waste wood. Provided that you use this energy source in a right way, you will experience 98% fewer CO2 emissions as compared to fossil fuels. This is one big advantage of using this energy source, but to enjoy this and many other benefits, you need to choose a good pellet stove. To make a right choice, you can always rely on products offered by manufacturers like Harman, Whitefield, Lennox, Quadra, Stovax etc.

· Another great option is to go for wood. This is an obvious energy source option for you to consider burring in your multi fuel burners, but you need to use it correctly. When you burn wood in the right way, it proves to be environmentally appropriate and economically beneficial. It means, you can rely on wood as a good energy source but at the same time, you need to educate yourself about using it correctly. This is where you need more info about the science of burning wood along with finding some tips about installing your wood stove correctly.

· Corn and biomass can also be used in multi fuel burners. Though corn is still a relatively newer energy source, it is becoming popular for its amazing benefits. For instance, when compared to wood, it has a lower airborne particle rate. Another benefit is that using corn in your multi fuel burners can help you reduce your heating bills by 80%; but that’s only when you have your corn burning stove installed correctly.

The bottom line is that multi fuel burners are great because they allow you to use different energy sources. Some of these sources are old and some are new and exciting. All have their benefits – just make sure you know how to install your stove and how to use the respective energy source.

Potbelly stoves are made of cast iron. They are free standing and have a large-diameter pipe that vents through the ceiling or through a wall. The name refers to the barrel shape of these stoves. It is considered an emblem of 19th and early 20th century Americana.

Potbelly stoves were mostly used to heat large spaces such as schoolhouses, rail stations, and stores. As Americans moved west, many of them installed potbelly stoves in their houses because they did a better job of heating than a regular fireplace. With its iconic claw feet, the front part of potbelly stove has a little door that opens for feeding in wood or cleaning out ashes.

Today, most potbelly stoves are replicas, though a few genuine antiques exist. Some people install them for a particular decor, and others use them for heating. New ones cost around $2,000. A well-made, properly located stove can easily heat a house of 2,000 square feet. There are several steps to installing a potbelly stove in a home.

Modern potbelly stoves can burn one or more fuel sources, such as coal, wood, or corn pellets. The first step after choosing an actual stove is to make a series of measurements in the room where the potbelly stove is to go. It has to have certain clearances from combustible materials: 36 inches from unprotected woodwork or other combustible objects, and 18 inches from non-combustible objects. Sometimes there are local building codes that need to be addressed during installation, so it is a good idea for the homeowner to check this out up front.

Heat protection is important with potbelly stoves. A heat shield is metal or other non-combustible material, and it considerably cuts the fire hazard from this type of stove. The addition of a heat shield not only increases safety, but also decreases the required clearances from walls and other surroundings. Whether a heat shield is used or not, the potbelly stove msut have a brick, metal, or tile surface underneath it. It should never be placed on anything that could catch fire if ashes or coal were to fall on it, such as vinyl flooring or carpeting.

Venting is extremely important. Potbelly stoves require a Class A double walled chimney to meet building codes. The best bet is to hire a professional chimney contractor to complete this part of the stove installation. An improperly installed chimney can be dangerous or even deadly if carbon monoxide doesn't vent properly to the outside of the house.
